What are the 7 Chakras & Misconceptions About Them

Here is a video from our energy course covers the bulk of this article*

Seen from an energetic perspective, we are made up of layers of vibrating energy, each with their own specific vibration and purpose. Our physical bodies consist of energy that vibrate very slowly which is why they appear as solid. The energy body is the layer beneath the physical body, that vibrates much faster and is more purely energetic.

The energy body is like a subtle energy reflection of the physical body, composed of etheric matter. Etheric matter is the binding substance that exists in-between matter and non-matter, the substance that connects the physical with nonphysical. The energy body is a bit of a complex system with a number of different components, all working together as one unit.

What appears to be the main component is the energy field around your physical body, the subtle energy body, sometimes referred to as the aura, and it extends beyond your physical body between twelve inches to several feet, depending on your state of being. The aura is more of a reflection of how the inner workings of the energy body are functioning. It consists of interpenetrating layers or levels of energy that oscillate in and around the body like an opalescent egg-shaped bubble.

Within this bubble and connecting to the spinal area of the body are energy centers known as chakras. The chakras correspond to the glandular system of the body and move out of it both front and back like funnels of rotating energy. Imagine the rotating energy funnels within the egg-shaped bubble of the energy field; this is what it might look like using inner vision.

Chakra is a Sanskrit word which means “wheel”. The chakras are similar to wheels, in that they are spinning vortexes of energy. They are centers of force, located within our etheric body, through which we receive, transmit and process life energies.

The chakras are located through the middle of the body, starting at the base of the spine(Root chakra) the navel area( Sacral chakra) above the navel, lower chest area(Solar plexus) the middle of the chest, in between breasts(Heart chakra) the throat( Throat chakra) the middle of the forehead, between brows(Third eye) and the crown of the head( Crown chakra). These seven major chakras correspond to specific aspects of our consciousness and have their own individual, color, characteristics, and functions. There are also secondary chakra centers such as finger tips, joints, kneecaps, armpits, and all throughout the body that absorb energy that gets redistributed to the 7 major chakras.

All 7 major chakras also work in correspondence and support one another as a whole. Each of these chakras also correspond with the organs in that they are located and work in providing energy and support for their functioning. Think of the body as a machine and the chakras as the electricity providing the much needed energy and direction for the machine.

The chakras provide the framework for our beingness in this world. That is why they provide the ability to sense what around us. Consciousness is an energy of awareness and the chakras are the sub-components of that awareness.

Root chakra, I am. Navel Chakra, I Feel. Solar Plexus Chakra, I do. Heart Chakra, I love. Throat Chakra, I speak. Third Eye Chakra, I see. Crown Chakra, I understand.

The chakras are openings through which emotional, mental, and spiritual force flows into physical expression. They are the openings through which our attitudes and belief systems enter into and create our mind/body structure.

Being that the chakras are the energetic subcomponents of our consciousness, the chakras can also make us more aware of subtle energies. Subtle energies directly affect our aura and by extension the chakras themselves. Through the chakras, we can sense subtle energies around us and interact with them as well. Although all the chakras are needed for such awareness, the one that ultimately allows us to perceive is the third eye chakra.

The third eye chakra is located in the forehead. The organ the third eye functions with is the brain and the nerve cluster located behind the forehead, is responsible for all sorts of psychic phenomena. This is what the world refers as the ‘third eye,’ and people mention if you open the third eye, you become psychic.

Now, the brain is what gives us the ability to perceive the world with the five senses. This nerve cluster which is inactive in most of our brains, is what grants us the ability to perceive energy. So in a sense, yes, the 3rd eye chakra is responsible for making you psychic. But the third eye chakra does not function on its own and needs the good balance and functioning of all the other chakras to be able to perceive subtle energies. Because the whole energy system is connected, and when you use up energy, it flows from another area. Typically, the main energy storage areas distributes it to all other areas when needed. More on that later.

Misconceptions about Chakras

Before I continue, I must share a disclaimer about chakras… chakras aren’t the same for everyone. As mentioned before, reality is very subjective to the observer… now it is even more subjective from an energetic perspective. Chakras for some people are not like wheels… some people may even are them as different colors or even change their color. Some may even see or feel blobs of energy. This is something I almost never hear shared by anyone. And this confuses people because sometimes they do feel or see energy in the locations of the chakras during meditations but… its not like they were told it would be so they end up thinking they’re doing something wrong. One of the biggest misconceptions in the new age world is that one answer applies to everyone else.

Everything mentioned in this article is also an interpretation of the chakra system. There are Sanskrit texts for five chakra, nine, 10 and even twenty eight chakra systems. In fact, some of those Sanskrit sources teach one to visualize the colored light and in the shape of a lotus or wheel in the specific points of the body and then chant a mantra on it for a certain purpose. And then, we have other energy system models such as the Taoist energy system that indicates we have three energy centers, that are in the upper dantien (head), middle dantien (chest) and lower dantien (navel). So what is the truth?

Energy is fluid and heavily shaped by perception. The energy body can have any number of energy centers depending on how you perceive it to be or what spiritual practice you are engaged in. All these systems are similar though as they attribute to the experience of consciousness as a human being. The navel, heart, crown of the head are three places in the body where all humans experience emotional and spiritual phenomena. And our organs are indeed fueled by our energy which naturally creates energy centers at all these specific points of the body. So the Taoist and chakra energy system are both energy systems that allow us to map our energy body in an organized and efficient way.

In this case, we are using the 7 chakra model of the energy system and it allows for us to better know ourselves and improve our overall well being. I will now in more detail go over the 7 chakras and what they most commonly tend to indicate about your beingness.

Note: These are the most common interpretations of the 7 chakras. Some of these things may not ring true for you. While all of our chakras work similarly on their respective organs, when it comes to aspects of our personality and emotions, chakras can work a bit differently for each of us. We all function quite differently in that regard and what may be true to you will not be true to others. Chakras are also fluid in that something like sexuality is ever-flowing throughout all the chakras and can be more centered in another chakra than another, or multiple/all at once.

Root Chakra

We know this chakra is balanced when we feel we are in good health and have vitality, as well as having a sense of trust for most people and things in the world.  We feel safe and secure and are prosperous.  Having a balanced root chakra allows us to relax.

We can tell if this chakra is blocked if we are feeling fearful.  This chakra is related to courage and safety, so fear is a major blockage of the root chakra.  Other ways to tell if the root chakra is blocked is if we feel anxious, restless, are lacking discipline or are unstable financially.  Very disorganized people may also be lacking energy flow through the root chakra.

On the flip side, those of us who have the root chakra overstimulated will feel sluggish and lazy.  They may hoard items and act greedy.  They seem to be afraid of change since they are so reliant on keeping their security.

Keep in mind, what keeps these chakras in balance are healthy patterns that we follow…  Imbalanced chakras are the results of negative patterns that become habitual. Also, trauma and certain events in our lives tend to drive us down such patterns that end up unbalancing our chakras. For example, a relationship with a very possessive person that cheats on his significant other all the time will damage and cause strong imbalance in the person’s heart chakra… well most of their chakras really.

Sacral Chakra

The Sacral chakra is our second chakra.  The sacral, also known as the navel chakra is located on the navel, above the groin and below the belly button. The Sacral Chakra governs the sexual organs, Ovaries / Testicles, bladder, bowel and lower intestine.  It houses and regulates our emotional, sexual and creative energy. Desire is centered here, our dreams, crushes, fantasies, ambitions. Our relationships/bonds to others, friends and family are centered here as well.

When your sacral chakra is balanced, you can enjoy having emotional balance and the full spectrum of pleasure. Sexual confidence, in fact, overall confidence and even being attractive to others can come with a balanced sacral chakra.  Freedom of creative expression and ability to share your emotions with others. We can become quite passionate and energetic with our goals or projects with this chakra well balanced.

An out of balance sacral chakra can cause us to be very emotionally impulsive, explosive or unemotional all together.

If it’s overactive, we may become manipulative of others, have obsessive sexual thoughts, be addicted to sex or masturbation, or become easily obsessive and dependent of certain people.

A blocked sacral chakra may cause to have a strong lack of energy and drive to do anything, poor social skills, lack of desire, passion and even self-denial of pleasure.

Solar Plexus Chakra

The third chakra is referred to as the solar plexus chakra and is located about two inches below the breastbone in the center behind the stomach.  Organs associated with this chakra are the stomach, gall bladder, spleen, liver, etc. – as well as the skin as a system, the muscular system as a system, and the face in general. Center of belief. Beliefs shape our reality in our mind. They also shape the subconscious programming that regulate our patterns of thought. Hence, this chakra is where the ego sits. All living beings tend to have the first two components of consciousness, but most don’t’ have the third. A personality to the consciousness. Big part of this is belief in oneself. Confidence shapes fight or flight. How one reacts and navigates through the world and its challenges. Belief is based in this here chakra.

The third chakra is the center of personal power, confidence, passions and impulses. Notice how passions and impulses are also a component of the sacral chakra. This is rather commonplace and ought not to confuse you. The sacral chakra is the emotional self so naturally impulses would be centered there. The solar plexus chakra is the logical self, the self constructed by your thoughts, so naturally your passions, impulses and all the patterns that make you, would be centered there as well. The chakras are all connected, so don’t be surprised by such things. Now moving on,

We can easily feel this chakra whenever we have a gut feeling about something. Our subconscious mind is very much connected to this chakra so it may send a signal of to it to let you know that something is off.   A balanced solar plexus promotes a healthy self esteem, strong will power and self clarity.  When open, we feel very confident and able to take on new challenges and achieve any of our goals.

When the solar plexus chakra is out of balance, a lack of confidence is very common. Insecurity would pervade our sense of self and most things we do. So we may care too much of what others think of us and let their opinion or what we think their opinions are, dictate our perception of ourselves.  Depression can come as of a result of an unbalanced solar plexus chakra. Low energy, low willpower and lack of self control are other common symptoms.  Since it is the energy center that radiates around your digestive system, having this chakra out of balance can even lead to liver, digestive and respiratory problems.

Now an overactive solar plexus chakra would make someone overly egotistical. Too self centered, too selfish, unable to think about others or see things from their perspective. Such people can also be very controlling of others and power hungry.

Heart Chakra

The heart chakra is the fourth chakra and is in the center of your chest. The organs it corresponds to are the heart, Circulatory System and Thymus Gland. The heart chakra centers around love.  Now, I know love is such a romantic concept and some might roll their eyes, but love is the basis of connection, unity to the self, the world and others.  It is openness to the world and acceptance, embrace of it.  Through the heart chakra, one has the ability to love themselves, others and receive love as well. So in essence, it is also the center of compassion, of empathy.   The heart chakra brings a deep connection and compassion for other people, animals and the environment.

So naturally, a balanced heart chakra, means being able to love and receive love very freely. You may become very welcoming to the world, people and animals alike. People feel good around you and naturally feel loving towards you. You may have strong bonds and connections to people and you seem to be favored in others eyes. You have a great sense of empathy and compassion for other people and they, the same for you. Unity in life is what a balanced heart chakra represents. In all aspects.

Now if it is unbalanced, you can be rather shy, withdrawn from others, unempathetic or unable to love others. Most commonly, you may not love yourself. This lack of love can cause a disconnect with one’s beingness and cause depression. Unbalanced heart chakras can also cause one to be afraid of relationships, afraid of intimacy mistrusting of others.

An overactive heart chakra can lead one to be manipulative, possessive or overly sensitive, overdramatic. Crying over any little thing, worrying about people all the time and whatnot. Feelings of loneliness, feelings of rejection can also be commonplace.

Throat Chakra

The throat chakra is located in the throat.  More specifically, it is right at the V on the collarbone at the lower neck. The Throat Chakra governs the throat, thyroid, mouth, teeth, tongue and jaw. The throat chakra is the center of communication. It regulates one’s ability to express thought through sound, creative work and writing. Through the throat chakra, we share our self with others, our beliefs, opinions or even random ideas that pop up in our heads.

When our throat chakra is balanced, we have an easy time of translating our thoughts into concise and very understandable words. People listen to what you would have to say and comprehend it all thoroughly. To the same effect, speaking with others feels pleasant for you and is pleasant for others. You’d have little difficulty expressing your creative ideas into actuality. Conversational flow comes natural and people tend to be accepting of your ideas.

When the throat chakra is imbalanced, you may feel rather insecure of your voice and what you want to say. In fact, you may even have trouble thinking of what to say because your fear of speaking is blocking your freedom of expression. When you do speak, your voice may sound weak and lack resonance. It won’t be heard or felt and can often be ignored. You may have difficulty translating thoughts into words and just become lost in trying to communicate your thoughts. Shyness, then of course, is the natural result of such imbalance.

Overactive throat chakras on the other hand, tend to be those of gossipers. Oh these people, they love to talk about others and things they shouldn’t. And they love to talk so much in general, that they annoy others. They make for bad listeners as they tend to think the conversation centers around their voice.

Third Eye Chakra

The third eye chakra is our sixth chakra and is located right above our eyebrows in the center of our forehead.  The Third Eye Chakra governs the pituitary gland, pineal gland, skull, eyes, brain, nervous system and the senses. Now the third eye is obviously centered on the brain, the brain which processes the world around us. It grants our consciousness the tools to sense everything around us in the here and now. The third is the center of our sensory awareness. But our third eyes are generally open only to that extent, the more open it becomes, the more we are made aware of. The subtler energies that are also considered to be psychic information.

The third eye chakra is the center for psychic ability, for thinking, intelligence, imagination and the intuition. As the center of the thought and perception, the analytical side of the mind is centered in here as well.  This chakra is known as the watcher, the seat of the soul, because it is through this chakra that we perceive the universe. With a balanced third eye chakra, one can perceive beyond the veil and see the truth beneath things. With truth, comes a strong clarity in the mind that allows for free-flowing thought and imagination. One has less boundaries in the mind and can think of anything from any point of view. A balanced third eye signifies a great connection between the conscious and subconscious mind, allowing one to interpret information much more easily and see more than is already there. Now for those with fully open third eyes…

Such people are able to perceive subtle energies such as the thoughts of others, astral entities, communicate with said entities or with other people telepathically (if they could),  can astral travel, tap into energies from anywhere in the universe and gather information from it.

When the third eye is out of balance, people may lack mental clarity and have incoherent thoughts. Such people may be on either side of the spectrums, of being overly analytical and rigid or far too mentally feeble and unable to focus.  Imbalanced third eye chakras also result in only being to see things in one way which tends to disable them from ever seeing that they are wrong. This makes it difficult for them  to break out of mental thought patterns.

An unbalanced third eye may cause fatigue, problems with sleeping, poor vision and memory.  Excessive energy flow to the third eye may cause delusions, constant nightmares, hallucinations and  even constant migraines.

Crown Chakra

The crown chakra is the seventh and last of the primary chakras. The organs the chakra governs are the Head, brain, ears, eyes, pineal gland, skeletal and muscular systems as well as the skin.  The crown chakra connects us to the universe and allows for the flow of wisdom and spiritual consciousness into our beingness. This chakra disperses universal energy into the 6 other chakras.   This is the chakra that connects you to the universal consciousness. As I like to mention, the universe is interconnected and well, the crown chakra is the aspect of our consciousness that is connected to everything. It is through this chakra, that one would experience enlightenment. This chakra generally doesn’t open unless you are very well developed spiritually, having already balanced and opened the rest of the chakras.

A balanced crown chakra would have a strong sense of spiritual connection to the world. An understanding that we are all essentially one, even if one doesn’t fully feel it all the time, this understanding would prevail throughout life and your actions. This natural sense of compassion will also allow for one to be much more open minded. Able to see from different perspectives.

On the other hand, a closed crown chakra could make someone very  close minded and also closed to the world. They tend to be apathetic, unable to feel compassion or reason to care about others or the state of the world. Unbalanced crown chakra could blind someone in their path, make them lost as to what they are to do next. Lack of joy, perhaps even strong sense of boredom with life. An overactive crown tends to result in addiction to spirituality which can lead to very extreme practices such as excessive fasting or practices involving pain. Such over activeness could even lead to a disassociation with the body.
